The present Atlas is one of the end-products of the DARIUS Programme. The DARIUS Programme (2009–14) was a multidisciplinary geological programme that comprised original scientific projects, executed by academic scientific teams involving more than 350 scientists representing 150 research institutions from 25 countries in Europe, the Middle East and western Central Asia. The DARIUS consortium was sponsored by major oil companies (BHP Billiton, BP, ENI, Maersk Oil, Petronas Carigali, Shell, Statoil, Total) and French research organizations (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique-INSU, University Pierre & Marie Curie). The main objective of DARIUS was to characterize the tectonostratigraphic evolution of a vast domain around the central Tethys extending from the eastern Black Sea in the west to western Central Asia in the east, and to reconstruct the post-Late Palaeozoic geodynamic evolution of the domain. The priority was to investigate the 6000 km long continuous orogenic belt extending from Crimea/Anatolia in the west to the western Tien Shan in the east, including the surrounding basins, through the collection of original data and the development of regional syntheses."
