It is concluded that carbon in the East Pacific Rise water-rock system is predominantly of mantle origin. Although the data represent evidence for abiogenic methane in a thermal environment, it is not certain whether CH4 is being extracted directly from basalt, or whether it represents chemical equilibrium in the C-H-O system Carbon and Hydrogen Gases in Hydrothermal Systems : The Search for a Mantle Source [texte imprimé] / John Andrew Welhan, Auteur ; University of California, San Diego, Organisme de soutenance . - s.l. : [s.n.], 1981 . - xxii, 194 p. ; 27 cm.
