Résumé : "This is the second edition of the now definitive text on partial differential equations (PDE). It offers a comprehensive survey of modern techniques in the theoretical study of PDE with particular emphasis on nonlinear equations. Its wide scope and clear exposition make it a great text for a graduate course in PDE. For this edition, the author has made numerous changes, including: a new chapter on nonlinear wave equations, more than 80 new exercises, several new sections, and a significantly expanded bibliography." Several methods, providing exact expressions for the radiation field in a semi-infinite atmosphere, are described in detail and applied to unpolarized and polarized continuous spectra and spectral lines. Among these methods, the Wiener–Hopf method, introduced in 1931 for a stellar atmospheric problem, is used today in fields such as solid mechanics, diffraction theory, or mathematical finance. Asymptotic analyses are carried out on unpolarized and polarized radiative transfer equations and on a discrete time random walk. Applicable when photons undergo a large number of scatterings, they provide criteria to distinguish between large-scale diffusive and non-diffusive behaviors, typical scales of variation of the radiation field, such as the thermalization length, and specific descriptions for regions close and far from boundaries.
Its well organized synthetic view of exact and asymptotic methods of radiative transfer makes this book a valuable resource for both graduate students and professional scientists in astrophysics and beyond.Note de contenu : An overview of the content (p.1) - PART 1 - Scalar radiative transfer equations (p.11) - PART 2 - Scattering polarization (p.255) - PART 3 - Asymptotic properties of multiple scattering (p.459) - Bibliographie en fin de chap. - Index auteurs (p.583-586) - Index sujets (p.587-593) - Liste des figures (p. xxi-xxvii) - Liste des tables (p.xxix-xxxii) Radiative transfer : an introduction to exact and asymptotic methods [texte imprimé] / Hélène Frisch (1940-.... ; physicienne) , Auteur . - Berlin ; Heidelberg ; Dordrecht ; New York ; London ; Paris ; Wien : Springer Verlag, 2022 . - 1 vol.
